Electric Vehicle Innovation Ontario (EVIO)

Developing Canada’s Next Generation of Automotive Mobility Technologies

About EVIO

Electric Vehicle Innovation Ontario (EVIO) is a University of Toronto-led network that trains world-class R&D talent to develop game-changing EV and automotive mobility technologies.

Funded by the Government of Canada, through the Federal Economic Development Agency for Southern Ontario (FedDev Ontario), EVIO is powered by a network of eight leading southern Ontario research universities (Windsor, Western, Waterloo, York, TMU, Toronto, Queens, and Ottawa), and the region’s most dynamic EV firms in core industries (e.g., mobility, electric infrastructure, semiconductors).

Our Mission

Ontario is in a global race to become a leader in the EV and automotive mobility space. Significant investments have been made in attracting multi-national EV firms, building charging infrastructure, and shoring up critical-mineral mining. The long-term success of the sector is predicated on the rapid development and commercialization of world-leading innovative EV technologies.

EVIO exists to kick-start advanced EV technology development using state-of-the-art methodologies. Through March 2028, EVIO will support projects led by post-graduate trainees (graduate students and post-doctoral fellows), each in partnership with a company. By placing post-graduate trainees into industry-led R&D projects, EVIO aims to grow firm capacity, generate IP, and build a pipeline of highly qualified personnel (HQP) to support the long-term success of Ontario’s EV sector.
